Multimedia retrieval systems serve as mediators between the user interests on one side and the raw multimedia data stored in data collections on the other side. Therefore, these systems have to combine techniques from diverse areas of research such as data bases, linguistics, feature extraction techniques for text, image, sound and video, interface design and user modeling. In this article, we give a brief introduction to multimedia retrieval systems and current research in this area. |
