This dissertation thesis addresses the question in how far the close conceptual relationship (or even interdependency) between spatial and temporal expressions is reflected in their application in natural discourse. Earlier findings on the applicability conditions of spatial and temporal terms such as before/after and right/left are complemented by empirical investigations. As a result, both fundamental differences and a number of parallels are identified; these are traced back to more general discourse phenomena as well as to (shared and diverging) conceptual aspects concerning the two cognitive domains. |
